Motivation

What steps need to be taken to help ensure that treatment is sought whenever someone is abusing alcohol and/or drugs. No reasonable person can make an argument that we can ever build enough jails or prisons to get this country out of our drug addiction problem. The war on drugs was lost years ago.  Some people take the position that we need to treat drug addiction as a disease and treat it accordingly. Fair enough. I agree but that position fails to take into account the personal motivation of the person who is seeking treatment. Most people who are sick will be motivated to follow the treatment guidelines because he or she has an incentive to get well and be cured of the disease or illness.  On the other hand, someone suffering from addiction does have an incentive to continue using drugs and/or alcohol. Some people may say that is crazy--why would anybody make the decision to continue using given everything negative that happens with drug use. Guess what? The decision to continue

No Easy Solution

I want to begin my blog by talking about the drug problem currently in the United States.  I am not a doctor, therapist, or addiction specialist.  I will not pretend to be an expert.  I am an attorney who has seen first hand the destruction of drug addiction.  The word "crisis" tends to get used so much that it begins to lose all meaning.  However, in this instance, I take the position that the term correctly describes the current situation.  There is a ripple effect where addiction affects not only the addict but also friends, family, and the community as a whole. I think the first issue that must be addressed is the belief that a complex problem such as drug addiction can be solved by a simple solution.  An easy and simple solution may work in the world of so called experts and commentators in the media where the soundbite rules supreme.  However, many of the people crafting the easy fix usually do not have the burden of carrying out the solution.
