The Importance of Uninsured and Underinsured Auto Insurance

There are drivers on the road who don't carry enough insurance or have no insurance at all.  What would you do if you are involved in an auto accident with one of those drivers?

Say you get into an accident with another driver and it was not your fault.  You would provide the police report and any other relevant evidence to the at fault driver's insurance company.  The insurance company would then pay for you to get your car repaired as well as compensate you for any lost wages and medical bills.  However, what if the other party does not have any insurance or does not carry enough insurance to pay for your damages? Now, there is a major problem.  You are responsible for any damages that is not covered by the other party.   Could you sue?  Yes, but what if there is nothing to collect? You need to carry uninsured and underinsured auto insurance.

What is the difference between uninsured and underinsured insurance?

Uninsured auto insurance will pay for your damages when you are in an accident with an at fault driver who does not have any libability insurance at all.

Underinsured auto insurance will compensate you for your damages when you are involved in an accident with a driver who is at fault and the liability limits are not enough to pay for your damages.  In this instance, the at fault driver's insurance company will pay for the damages up to the policy limits.  After that your underinsured insurance covers the additional damges up to the policy limits for your insurance policy.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage will cover any medical expenses and lost wages.  Uninsured and underinsured motorist property damage will step in to cover any property damages that you suffer.

Be sure to talk to your insurance agent to get a full and complete understanding of your insurance policy.  Each insurance company and policy is different.
